Ahoy mateys! Tis “National Talk like A Pirate Day” and do we have treasures for ye! Throughout the day, we’ll be showcasing four games that will have a pirate theme to them. First up on our list is SEAFALL. The world is starting to claw its way out of a dark age and has begun to rediscover seafaring technology. Players take on the role of a mainland empire that consults with a consortium of advisors to discover new islands, explore those islands, develop trade, send out raiding parties, take part in ship-to-ship combat, and more. Be wary, this game be a legacy game, so the game will change up as you play and will affect later games.
Next up on the list is a double feature! Catan: Explorers and Pirates and Catan: Seafarers both utilize the pirates to make the game more difficult. Catan: Seafarers plays the same way as the original Catan plays except ye are also using ships, and when ye land on a 7, the pirate ship can be moved just like the robber can. Explorers and Pirates contains a number of new game mechanisms. For example, ships are now equipped for expeditions and can be moved freely across the board. In the ships ye transport settlers, crews, fish, or spices across the seas. Ye goal is to build new outposts on the islands that are still undiscovered and to complete the Council of Catan’s missions in the most skillful way possible.
G’yaaaarrrrrrr! This be the last of these pirate-y games for “Talk like a Pirate Day”. These pirates use their ships not to sail the seas, but sail the stars. Firefly Fluxx is a card game in which the cards themselves determine the current rules of the game. By playing cards, you change numerous aspects of the game: how to draw cards, how to play cards, and even how to win. At the start of the game, each player holds three cards and on a turn a player draws one card, then plays one card. By playing cards, you can put new rules into play that change numerous aspects of the game.
